About this Project
We made these de-light-ful paper lanterns with the Chinese New Year in mind, but with a few modifications to the cardstock, paint, glitter and other supplies, this colorful project can be adapted for any holiday, special event or just hanging around in the back yard!
Make 'em and hang 'em, then snap a pic and share 'em: #ACMooreInspired.
1Pink & Gold Lantern:
Step A: Cut the Gold cardstock to measure 10" x 11". Form into a cone and tape closed.
Step B: Use the ruler and pencil to draw a line 1" in from opposite edges of the Hot Pink cardstock. Then draw lines 1" apart from the top and bottom lines. Carefully cut the lines.
Step C: Glue one end of the cut Hot Pink cardstock to one end of the Gold tube. Glue the other end of the Hot Pink cardstock to the other end of the tube. Use paper clips to hold until the glue sets.
Step D: Use the round paper punch to make a hole on each side of one end. Cut a piece of Blue yarn and tie the ends to the holes for a hanger.
Step E: Punch small stars from Blue cardstock and glue around the top and bottom bands of the lantern.
2Green Double Lantern:
Step A: Cut two paper towel tubes to 7" each. Paint tubes with Gold paint. Let dry.
Step B: Cut a sheet of Green cardstock in half. Fold each half in half with 6" sides meeting. Cut 1" slits into the folded cardstock from the folded side to 1" from end.
Step C: Open cut cardstock pieces. Glue one end of the cardstock around one end of a painted tube. Glue the other end of the cardstock to the other end of the tube. Use paper clips to hold in place until glue sets. Repeat with the other tube.
Step D: Punch a hole on each side of one end of one tube. Repeat with the other end and the other tube.
Step E: Tie the two tubes together with Green yarn pieces. Tie a piece of yarn to the other end of one tube for the hanger.
Step F: Create a tassel with the Green yarn by wrapping the yarn around the piece of cardboard about 20 times. Cut a 14" piece of yarn and tie through one end of looped yarn on cardboard. Remove from cardboard. Cut a 6" piece of yarn and tie around the loops up towards the tied end. Cut the loops and trim the ends. Tie the ends of the top yarn piece on tassel to the holes on the bottom edge of the bottom tube. Tie a small piece of yarn around the top of the two pieces of yarn to pull the tassel into the center. (Tip: Use glue on all knots to secure them.)
Step G: Decorate the lantern with the Gold glitter glue and let dry.
3Red Traditional Lantern:
Step A: Stack two paper plates together so it looks like a UFO. Use paper clips to hold the plates together while the glue dries. Make a hole in the center of one plate. Cut a 24" piece of Yellow yarn. Tie the two ends of the yarn together in a knot. Pass the one end of the yarn through the hole from top of plate to bottom. Pull until knot hits hole. Proceed to glue two plates together. Repeat this step with six more sets of two paper plates.
Step B: Paint all your plates from Step A, as well as one more, with Red liquid watercolor paint. Let plates dry.
Step C: Make a hole in the center of the single plate with the round paper punch. Thread the Yellow yarn through the top and bottom of the hole as you did in Step A.
Step D: Create a tassel as you did in Step F of the Green Lantern but this time, use Yellow yarn and a 4" piece of cardboard.
Step E: Glue the plates together, starting with the single plate on the bottom and adding the double plates up to the top plates with the hanger. Glue the tassel to the piece of yarn that hangs from the bottom of the single plate. Let the glue set.
4Blue Star Lantern:
Step A: Fold Blue cardstock in half. Cut 1" slits from folded end to 1" from the top.
Step B: Open cardstock. Form a cone with cardstock and glue ends together. Use paper clips to hold until glue sets.
Step C: Punch larger stars around the top and bottom bands of lantern. Punch smaller stars along strips.
Step D: Make a hole with the round paper punch on each side of one end. Cut a piece of Yellow yarn and tie the ends to the holes for a hanger. (Tip: Use glue on the knot to secure.)
