I buy Folgers coffee in the plastic containers. I have about 8 of them right now. I hate to throw them away. I would like to use them possibly for Christmas gifts. I could put cookies in them, if I can get the coffee smell out.
Does anyone have any other ideas? How about ideas for decorating them? Like an altered project? I know that last year, you could go on-line and download printable patterns to put around the can from the Folgers website.
Thank you!

As an adamant non-coffee drinker, I think it is almost impossible to get the smell of coffee out of plastic. I can't use a plastic portable cup that my husband or daughter has had coffee in or I swear my tea will taste like coffee. Having said that, maybe you could put the ingredients in them to make a - what else - coffee cake. You know how they do with the cookie mixes in the canning jars. Put all the dry ingredients in them. Put material around the top and add some accents, like cinnamon sticks and greenery, and a tag with the recipe to add the wet ingredients. Since they are red, if you can get all the Folgers advertising off of them (not sure if they are stickers or can be scrubbed off), you could leave them red and maybe embellish with some rub-ons.

Thanks Karen. I was searching websites earlier today to get the coffee smell out. I wash them in the dishwasher but, they still smell. I read that vinegar will take it out. I might try it. The Folgers labels come off very easily and I found the Folgers website to download the printable Christmas labels: http://www.folgers.com/coffees/holiday-canister/index.shtmlI knew about those because my husband and I both work for Procter & Gamble. Even though we work in the Cosmetics (Cover Girl & Max Factor) division, they put stuff on the internal P&G website like the Christmas label idea. P&G does encourage recycling.

I remember a trick from years ago to get the smells out of Tupperware containers. Take a piece of wadded up newspaper, wet it, and stuff it in the can, put on the lid, and refrigerate for 48 hours. Worked for me everytime. Can't hurt to try it. I like the idea of using them for the coffee cake mixes.

You know what is really funny? Coffee itself is a great smell remover. If you ever get flooded and your carpets get wet and moldy smelling when drying, sprinkling coffee grounds over the rug and letting sit for 24 hours totally removes the smell. It also works in a damp/musty basement or an area where a cat has sprayed. Go figure.

I would try to wash it with vinegar and baking soda. Let is soak for awhile before you wash it. Suggestion: Perhaps buy a pack of coffee, jar of creamer, coffee cup and small cookies. Put them in the coffee jar with shredded paper and a nice note in it.

Since the labels come off easily, if you do floral or greenery arrangements, you could use the container as your base since it is red.

Thanks for the link. Each month we have several empty Folgers containers and I hate putting them in the recycling bin. I have several metal coffee cans that I use for scrapbooking trash. But couldn't figure out what to do with the plastic containers. I also found the coffee recipes link there too. Thanks again!!!

Thank you everyone for the responses and ideas for cleaning and crafting the coffee cans. I have not had time to do anything with them yet. If I can get the odor out, I am thinking of making hot chocolate mix and put in the containers.
You are welcome for the Folgers link.

Hi. I am new to this. I have TONS of these cans and wanted to use them for cookies as well. I love the printouts from Folgers, great idea! I got the coffee smell out of the cans. All I did was clean them with soap and water and left them open. I have been collecting them all year so the smell is now gone. Anyways, how do you get the original label off? I haven't figured that part out yet. Any ideas?

As I was transporting some gravy this week, it occurred to me that these would be great containers to put cooled-down soup in to keep in the frig or to take to someone who wasn't feeling well or for a pot-luck, etc. Transport in those and then put into another dish to reheat.

I too started saving the Folger's canisters but also use the Maxwell House ones. These are blue. Wanted to find a way to cover or remove logoes - Thanks! I use to store different kinds of things. Also makes a great holder for of yarn. Cut a hole in lid to feed yarn thru.

And Domino Sugar also has yellow canisters. Hopefully, there will be some designs for Easter for that one.

How do you remove the folgers labels from the plastic cans? I've seen several comments that they are easy to remove, but how?

On the Folgers cans, the labels are only glued in one place. Carefully take a pair of scissors or a sharp knife. Slide the blade under the label just enought to slit it. It should tear off from there. You will be left with just a little bit where the the label is glued the can. You can either scrub it off with warm soapy water in the sink or put it in the dishwasher. I put mine in the dishwasher and it comes completely off.
