I am doing something unusual---normally I cross stitch or quilt or paint or any other thing (except knit, crochet or scrapbook) but today I am back to tackling a task for my dear MIL. She started 8 needlepoint chair seats 40 years ago. The designs are done, but now that everlasting fill in with the same yarn....over and over.....I can do it, not much difference than x-stitch really, but do you use a hoop? I simply cannot use one for cross stitch, I have small hands and it just gets in my way. Any body out there have some input?

Hoops can be a pain, you may want to try using a scroll frame for needlepoint, I found that it was easyer for me. It kept the fabric from shifting, and my stitches from being either to loose or tight. Even for x-stitch I tend to use a scroll frame, like you I have small hands and hoops can be a pain. The thing is the bigger the project the harder to keep tendion on the fabric. It also helps from cramping of the hands.
Good luck with the cover and would love to see them when they are done.

A scroll frame is easy to work with, I have used one for needlepoint as well. I find it gives you an even stitch as opposed to not working with a hoop or frame. The one I have has a stand so it is even easier to work with.

I think the scroll frame is the way to go. Even with embroidery. You may want to look into getting a floor stand scroll frame. They can be a bit pricey, but it saves on the hands and is so much easier to stitch with one hand under and one on top. It can also be used for embroidery for large pieces and is adjustable.

With something bigger like chair seats, I agree that you need a scroll frame to keep things uniform. When I have done small needlepoint items, I don't use anything.
